Scope and objective of this WG
Piezoelectric materials facilitate energy conversion from mechanical to electrical and vice versa. Thanks to the new technologies, enabling integration, they can be active as relatively small structures or parts of more complex systems, thus extending the frequency range in which they operate into high MHz range and the complex functionality, acting both as sensors, transducers and transmitters among other bringing close self-supported remote sensing systems for medical, safety and other applications.
Metamaterials are micro- and nanostructured artificial electromagnetic materials which offer an opportunity to realize electromagnetic material properties not available in nature, such as negative parameters, paramteres near zero, extreme chirality, and so on. They are rapidly maturing and become increasingly employed for the design of electronic and optical components, integrated circuits and functional devices. They will have ubiquitous applications ranging from the high speed computer chips to optical communications devices, high resolution imaging and biomedical sensors. Specialised electromagnetic materials will provide the necessary functionality for electronic devices and constitute the physical layer of the technologies dealing with electromagnetic signals in radio engineering, nanotechnologies, security, safety, and biology.

- Functional materials with specific physical/electrical properties
- Integrated systems based on multifunctional materials and structures
- Artificial materials with exotic and extreme values of electromagnetic parameters
- Fibre reinforced glasses for optomechanical applications
- Magnetic glass-ceramic or polymer matrix composites
- Phase change materials in organic and metallic matrices
- Conducting polymer materials
Target/market groups The topics are centred on materials & nanotechnologies as well as the related manufacturing & production technologies, while the applications concern most of EU priorities, namely:
- Health (diagnostics, monitoring)
- Transportation (safety, efficiency, reduction of pollution)
- ICT (integrated components)
- Energy (energy harvesting, energy conversion & management)
- Environment & Security (detectors, sensors, NDE)
