WG 4: Knowledge-based Structural and Functional Materials

Chair: Michal Basista (IPPT)

Under construction!

Highlights

Scope and objective of this WG

This will include materials issues related to the following:

  • advanced metal-ceramic composites (structural and multifunctional)
  • functionally graded materials (FGMs) and coatings
  • intermetallics and shape memory alloys
  • ceramics: high-temperature, lightweight and porous
  • metals and alloys
  • thermoelectric materials and composites for thermal management
  • hydrogen storage materials and systems
  • functional multilayer materials for sensors and actuators
  • functional carbon nanotube (CNT) /glass composites
  • fibre reinforced glasses for optomechanical applications
  • magnetic glass-ceramic or polymer matrix composites
  • ceramic bioglass foams with polymer coatings for tissue engineering
  • bioresorbable glasses and glass-ceramics
  • bioactive materials and biofibres
  • bioactive anti-bacterial coatings for metals, ceramics, glasses
  • phase change materials (e.g. PCM textiles) and PCM in organic and metallic matrices
  • conducting polymer materials
  • nanostructured and hybrid (inorganic/organic) materials and coatings

It is envisaged that in addition to the technical priorities, generic topics that will be covered include;

  • Regulatory, legislative and policy considerations which may affect the materials supply chain including environmental legislation and raw materials supply
  • Socio-economic aspects relating to the usage of energy and how these impact on the Sector and materials in particular.
  • Regional strengths, opportunities and issues.
  • Training & Skills
